Which e-commerce platform is right for you?
Short answer: WooCommerce works well for stores with up to a few hundred products that need flexibility, PrestaShop handles larger catalogs comfortably, and Shopify is the fastest way to launch if you don’t have in-house technical resources. In this article we compare all three across cost, flexibility and the type of business each one fits best.
Comparing the platforms
WooCommerce
A WordPress plugin, highly flexible and cheap to start with. Good for stores that want full control over code and integrations, especially if you’re already running WordPress for a blog or company site. It does need more attention when it comes to updates and security, since as a popular open-source solution it’s a frequent target for attacks.
PrestaShop
A standalone platform with rich sales features out of the box, popular especially across Europe. Works well for medium and larger stores with an extensive product catalog, as well as multi-language and multi-currency sales.
Shopify
A SaaS solution, you pay a monthly subscription and the provider handles hosting and security. The fastest way to launch, but less flexible for non-standard requirements, with more limits on owning your own infrastructure and data.
How to choose the right platform for your business
Key questions to ask before deciding: how many products do you plan to sell, how fast do you need to launch, do you have technical staff in-house, and how unusual are your sales processes. The more non-standard requirements you have, the less a ready-made platform will be able to handle without workarounds.
When none of the ready-made platforms are enough
Off-the-shelf platforms have a ceiling. Once you need unique sales logic, integrations with internal company systems, or the ability to scale to very high traffic, it’s worth considering a dedicated e-commerce platform built around your actual business, not one adapted from a generic template. We go deeper into when that switch makes sense in our article on custom system vs ready-made template.
