A store often outgrows its platform: it is slow, expensive to maintain or blocks growth. Switching platforms can be the right call, but only with a plan. Here is what to move and what to check.
When a migration makes sense
- the store is clearly slow despite optimization,
- the platform does not support the integrations or features you need,
- maintenance and fixes cost more than the platform brings in,
- you have security issues or missing updates,
- you want to change your sales model (for example B2B next to B2C).
If you are unsure where to move, read our comparison of WooCommerce, PrestaShop and Shopify.
What has to be moved
- Products: names, descriptions, images, prices, variants, attributes and categories.
- Customers and orders: order history and customer accounts. Passwords usually cannot be moved in a readable form, so customers may have to set them again.
- Content: information pages, terms, privacy policy and blog.
- Settings: taxes, payment and shipping methods, email templates.
SEO: the most important part
- List every store URL, especially categories and products that get traffic.
- Keep the URLs or set up 301 redirects to the new equivalents.
- Carry over titles, descriptions, headings and category copy.
- Submit the new sitemap in Google Search Console.
- After launch, monitor 404 errors and rankings.
Integrations
Before the switch, check payments, couriers, parcel lockers, your inventory system, accounting and marketplaces. Test a full order from cart to invoice.
How to run the switch
- Build the new store in a staging environment.
- Test orders, payments, emails and forms.
- Pick a low-traffic moment (not right before a sales peak).
- Switch the domain and enable the redirects.
- For the first days, watch orders, errors and Search Console.
What it costs
The cost depends on the number of products, integrations and how much the design changes. See how much an online store costs for the main factors.
Summary
A migration does not have to lower your sales if you move the products, keep or redirect the URLs and test orders before launch. If you are planning a platform change, get in touch.
