Short answer: Supabase is a great choice to start with - you get a PostgreSQL database, auth, file storage and an API in minutes, without a server. Your own PostgreSQL database pays off as the app grows, when you need full control over data and backups, or when you want a fixed price instead of growing usage fees. The good news: Supabase is plain PostgreSQL under the hood, so switching is realistic.
What exactly is Supabase?
Supabase is a backend-as-a-service platform built around PostgreSQL. On top of the database it offers user auth, file storage, server functions, realtime updates and auto-generated APIs. That is why AI tools like Lovable and Bolt use it - the app gets a backend without writing a server.
Comparison
| Supabase | Self-hosted PostgreSQL | |
|---|---|---|
| Getting started | Minutes, browser dashboard | Install and configure on a server |
| Auth, files, API | Included | Chosen and configured separately |
| Cost | Free tier with limits, Pro from ~$25/month + usage | Part of a fixed server price |
| Backups | On paid plans | Any schedule, under your control |
| Data location | Chosen cloud region | Exactly where the server is |
| Control and extensions | Limited to the platform | Full |
What to watch out for with Supabase
- Row Level Security - Supabase exposes the database through a public API. If a table has no RLS rules, its data can be readable by anyone. In AI-generated apps this is one of the most common problems.
- Paused projects - on the free plan, inactive projects are paused after a while.
- Costs as you grow - compute, egress and storage fees grow with the app.
- Platform lock-in - the more Supabase features you use (auth, storage, functions), the more work a future move takes.
When to stay on Supabase
When you are building an MVP, have few users and want to validate the idea fast. Supabase saves weeks of backend work.
When to move to your own database
When the app earns money and has steady traffic, when clients or regulations care about where data is stored, when you need your own backup schedule, or when the monthly bill stops being predictable.
What does migrating off Supabase involve?
- Database export - schema and data move with standard PostgreSQL tools.
- User auth - choose a replacement and migrate accounts so users don’t have to sign up again.
- Files - storage contents move to the server’s disk or S3-compatible storage.
- The app - Supabase client calls are replaced with your own API, ideally in stages.
There is also a middle ground: stay on Supabase and let someone handle its configuration, security and monitoring.
We help either way. As part of our deployment and hosting service we secure Supabase projects or move them to our server with a self-hosted PostgreSQL database and daily backups. Tell us about your project.
