Short answer: Vercel is best for getting started and for projects with irregular traffic - you deploy in a minute, pay little and never touch a server. Your own server (VPS) pays off when the app has steady traffic, needs a database and background jobs, or when cloud bills start growing faster than revenue. Many companies combine both.
Vercel and your own server at a glance
| Vercel | Own server (VPS) | |
|---|---|---|
| Getting started | Minutes, connected to GitHub | Server, domain, SSL and deployment setup |
| Cost model | Plan + usage fees (traffic, functions, images) | Fixed monthly server price |
| Scaling | Automatic | Manual or by upgrading the server |
| Database | External (e.g. Supabase, Neon) | On the same server or next to it |
| Background jobs, queues, cron | Limited, extra services | No limits |
| Global speed | Worldwide CDN | Fast in the server’s region, CDN optional |
| Maintenance | Minimal | Updates, monitoring, backups |
What does it cost in practice?
Vercel’s Hobby plan is free, but for non-commercial use only. A commercial site or app needs the Pro plan (around $20 per team member per month) with included usage - beyond it you pay for extra traffic, function invocations and image optimisation. A database usually comes on top as a separate subscription.
Your own server is a fixed amount regardless of traffic. One well-configured server can run the app, the database, queues and backups. The cost is time: someone has to set it up, update it and monitor it.
When to choose Vercel
- You are building an MVP or testing an idea and don’t know your traffic yet.
- You run a Next.js marketing site or blog with a global audience.
- Nobody on the team can look after a server.
When to choose your own server
- The app has steady, predictable traffic and monthly cloud bills keep rising.
- You need a database, background jobs, WebSockets or long-running processes.
- You want your data in one place and your costs known upfront.
- Your users are mostly in one region and you don’t need a global CDN.
The middle ground: managed hosting
You don’t have to choose between Vercel’s convenience and running a server yourself. With managed hosting the app runs on a fixed-price server, while a technical team handles setup, updates, backups and monitoring. Deployments can still run automatically on every GitHub push.
That is how our Node.js and Next.js deployment and hosting service works: a fixed monthly price, the database next to your app, and care instead of growing usage bills. Get in touch and we will compare the costs for your project.
